NATIVE PEOPLE

 

Ecuador is a pluricultural and multiethnic country, since it has several groups of native peoples and each of them with their languages, customs and traditions. In Ecuador we find 14 indigenous nationalities and 18 indigenous peoples. The ethnic self-identification of the Ecuadorian population is diverse.

 

Indigenous nationalities:

Quichuas, Shuar, Chachi, Achuar, Awa, Tsáchila, Epera, Shiwiar, Cofán, Siona.

Secoya, Sápara, Andoa, Waorani indigenous peoples.

Ethnic self-identification:

Mestizo, Montubia, Afro-Ecuadorian, Indigenous, White, Other ethnicities.

 

Characteristics of indigenous nationalities:

They have a common historical identity, language, and culture

They live in a certain territory

They have traditional institutions and forms of social, economic, legal, political organization and exercise of authority.
