CAJAS NATIONAL PARK
The Cajas National Park is a high altitude area, it is made up of high elevations and its name is due to the fact that it contains several lake systems in the form of enormous interconnected boxes. It normally has a cold climate with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 18°C, with frost, drizzle, fog and also days of intense sunshine frequently occurring.
The Park is known for the trails that cross evergreen cloud forests and its hundreds of lagoons, such as Laguna Toreadora, which is one of the largest. This area has very diverse fauna, such as Andean condors, giant hummingbirds and coatis (similar to a raccoon). Next to the park, there is the sanctuary of the Virgin of Cajas, it is a religious place of open-air pilgrimage where they say that the Virgin Mary appeared.
