FLOREANA ISLAND

Navigable Day tour

Floreana Island is the sixth largest island in the Galapagos archipelago in terms of area. Administratively, it belongs to the parish of Santa María, in the canton of San Cristóbal, province of Galapagos. Its largest settlement is Puerto Velasco Ibarra.

Floreana Island was the first island colonized by Ecuadorians in 1832. It was a penal colony that did not last long due to the lack of fresh water.

The story say Margret Wittmer, pregnant, arrived in 1932 with her husband Heinz and stepson Harry. They built a house and dedicated themselves to farming before giving birth to their son Rolf, the first person born in the Galapagos.

Floreana is known for being the scene of several mysterious disappearances in the 1930s. The most notable was that of a supposed Austrian baroness, who arrived shortly after the Wittmers with her three servants.

The fauna of Floreana Island in the Galapagos includes flamingos, sea lions, penguins, petrels, gulls, hawks, sharks, sea turtles, and more.

Birds such as flamingos, oystercatchers, whirligigs, black-necked stilts, white-faced ducks, Galapagos falcons, lava gulls, red-billed shearwaters, and Galapagos shearwaters.
